Any Port in a storm? No, that's not really what we were about on an overcast Sunday in January, with snow clouds threatening. Walt Rachele, instead, treated us to an education with everything you always wanted to know about Porto. Starting with a test of our basic knowledge, we were guided through various types of port and expected flavors of each. Although there was not an overall 'winner' of style, we each came away with a personal favorite. And we learned the real use for a rooster after opening a 3L bottle of Gigondas from Walt's cellar for a warm-up. The wines presented in this Porto 101 - Introduction to Ports:

There were votes taken on the preferred libations among various groupings of Porto, but my notes and Walt's differ on this point, hence, the unadorned list above.

We wish to thank the Browns for the use of their home and their hospitality. As a result of this tasting and, I suspect, a generous donation by Pat and Walt, the next scholarship in the AWS Educational Fund is fully funded.

Some of you still owe dues for 2005. You know who you are! See John Landon with your $10.

Don't forget to inform us of your ideas for the fast-approaching 25th Anniversary Tasting at the Johnstons' coming in March.

We will be publishing the membership list soon. We need up-to-date information on everyone. I'll be bothering you ere long, probably with a form.

The next tasting will be February 20, 2005 at 2:00 PM at the Pardoes' with Joe Fiola waxing eloquent about Sherry. Please reserve your spot at the Pardoes' home by calling them by February 16.
